The apartment in an apartment building from the 1960s called for renovation, which the owner - a retired lady, has wanted for a long time. The spatial design of old apartments is largely unsuitable for nowadays standards of living. The small and dark spaces do not offer what we want today. However, each apartment has a hidden potential that we, as interior designers, have to recognize and bring to light. And so it was this time as well.
Despite the small size, the client wanted an apartment that is airy, open and full of elegant accents, as well as sophisticated, feminine-romantic patterns. We opened, or optically enlarged the space, by eliminating a part of the wall, which separated the sleeping space from the hallway, and put the living room area into this, now much larger and more airy space. We also eliminated the door and the smaller wall that separated the hallway and the kitchen, thus connecting the living-room and the kitchen. In order for the apartment to be custom-tailored to truly suit the client, most of the larger furniture pieces, such as cupboards, bathroom equipment and a dining bench, were designed according to her specific wishes.
We decided on modern and clean lines, the use of natural materials and a bright colour palette, which increases the apparent space in which there is a lack of natural light. White colour is the basis of a colour palette in combination with a wide range of gray shades, softened by sophisticated lilac colours. This colour combination is fresh and at the same time calm and relaxing. Gold accents evoke additional elegance and a desirable bourgeois touch.
The apartment has turned into an elegant gallery, since each space has a corner or part of a wall intended for works of art such as paintings, sculptures and vases, which the lady has been collecting for many years. Many items are carefully displayed in showcases and on open shelves, and thus tell her stories from travels around the world, evoking precious memories from the past.
KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM
Older apartments have their own hidden charm and, by letting someone professionally guide us through the whole process, as well as by giving in to imagination, we can create a wonderful home. The client was very pleased with the final result and enjoys the days in her renovated apartment, which is, of course, the biggest reward for us as designers.
